The CW show Hart of Dixie is not only one of my favorite new shows, but also has amazing costumes! Costume designer Meredith Markworth-Pollack transports the viewers to life in the small southern town of Bluebell, Alabama. The lead female characters, Dr. Zoe Hart & Lemon Breeland, definitely have styles of their own. Zoe, played by Rachel Bilson, is a New York City girl who moved to Bluebell and slowly but surely is becoming her own version of a Southern Belle while holding on to her NYC style. Lemon, played by Jaime King, on the other hand, is the quintessential Southern Belle. I love the contrast in costumes between the two characters, because the clothes really help the audience understand who the characters are. The men of Hart of Dixie also have great style, including Lemon’s fiance George Tucker, and Southern heartthrob Wade Kinsella. Below are examples of the great costumes featured on CW’s Hart of Dixie. The show returns on Monday, January 23rd!
Being that I one day hope to be a costume designer, I always look forward to films where the costumes are a focal point. There is no doubt that the upcoming film “The Help,” in theatres August 10th, will feature gorgeous costumes from the 1960s. This film is based on the #1 New York Times Bestseller written by Kathryn Stockett. The story is about a secret writing project that gives “the help” in the 1960s a voice. The cast includes Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Viola Davis, and Allison Janney.
Costume Designer Sharen Davis brings the 1960s to life through the art of costume design:Emma Stone’s character, Skeeter: I adore Hilly’s (Bryce Dallas Howard) floral print dresses! When I design, I love using scallop details, as seen on Allison Janney’s costume:I love the back pleating detail on Hilly’s floral dress:I cannot wait to see this movie, not only for the costumes, but for the story as well!
Yesterday, I saw one of THE most beautiful films I have ever seen: “Midnight in Paris.” The cast includes Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Adrien Brody, and Kathy Bates. It was written and directed by Woody Allen.
The film is a romantic comedy set in Paris in both 2010 and the 1920s. Owen Wilson & Rachel McAdams’ characters are engaged to be married. Owen’s character is a writer who has a great love for Paris, and the city truly becomes magical for him at midnight. Here is the trailer:
I loved the story, but I also fell in LOVE with the costumes! Particularly those worn by Marion Cotillard’s character, Adriana, who happens to live in the 1920s. Costume designer Sonia Grande made the film even more beautiful! And Paris is already gorgeous! Here are my favorite costumes worn by Ms. Cotillard:
If you have a love for Paris and beauty, you must see this film!
The other day, I saw my very first episode of “Ghost Whisperer” on CBS starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, which had its final season in 2010. I immediately fell in love with her wardrobe! One blouse in particular that her character wore caught my eye, which I discovered was by one of my favorite designers, Nanette Lepore! This black and white blouse is so detailed, and I adore lace! Here are a few views of the blouse:
My favorite detail!
I also discovered that “Blair Waldorf” wore this on “Gossip Girl”
On Friday, June 10th, I attended an amazing costume exhibit at The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, CA. Debbie Reynolds has acquired a magnificent collection of iconic Hollywood costumes and memorabilia over the past 50 years. On display were 600 of the over 4,000 items she has collected. She is now putting them all up for auction, which will be held on June 18, 2011. For more information on how you can see this collection, ending June 17th, please refer to my previous post. Below are photographs I took at the exhibit. It was thrilling to see costumes from such movies as My Fair Lady, To Catch a Thief, Funny Girl, The Sound of Music, The Seven Year Itch, and Meet Me in St. Louis, to name a few!

Debbie Reynold’s in red at The Paley Center for Media!
My book of the exhibit signed by Debbie Reynolds
Audrey Hepburn’s “My Fair Lady” Costume:
At the exhibit, I purchased an incredible book signed by Debbie Reynolds! It is 1 of 250 signed copies. It features photographs all the items on display, as well as the dozens more up for auction that were not seen at the exhibit. The book includes detailed descriptions of every garment including information about the scenes in which they were featured, fabric used, and other unique qualities of the items. It will be a great resource for me as a fashion design student and eventually (hopefully ) a costume designer one day.

According to Ms. Reynolds, “My lifetime dream has been to assemble and preserve the history of the Hollywood film industry. Hollywood has been an enormous part of my life as I know it has been for countless fans all over the world. This collection represents a lifetime of collecting Hollywood artifacts and this is a rare opportunity to own a piece of Hollywood History for those who love the movies as much as I do. For the first time in nearly five decades, these iconic pieces will be made available to the public through a series of auctions presented by Profiles in History beginning in June 2011.”
Being that my dream is to become a Costume Designer, I look forward to hopefully seeing these Hollywood treasures in person!
