Diamond Jubilee Weekend: Epsom Derby Day 1

2 Jun

This weekend, the main celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee are taking place in the UK. The 2012 Investec Derby, held at the Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, England, is the first event of the Diamond Jubilee central weekend celebrations. Yesterday was known as “Ladies’ Day.” Today’s event is called the Investec Derby Day. The Queen is set to attend this event, as part of her Jubilee weekend. Here was the Queen at last year’s 2011 derby:

The Queen looked lovely in pink last year, but I’m betting on the Queen wearing blue or yellow to the event today! We shall see!

Kate looked lovely at last year’s derby in a Reiss dress:

At the races, dress code is very important. For yesterday’s Ladies Day, the dress code was spelled out as follows, according to the Investec Derby website:

  • Gentlemen must wear a jacket, collar and tie
  • Ladies are asked to wear a fascinator or hat
  • Jeans, shorts, denim or trainers are not acceptable
  • Children should be dressed smartly

The dress code for today’s races are much more formal, likely due to the Queen’s presence:

  • Either black or grey morning dress with a top hat, service dress or full national costume is obligatory for gentlemen on Investec Derby Day
  • Ladies must wear formal day dress, or a tailored trouser suit, with a hat or substantial fascinator
  • Children should be dressed smartly

During the races, model and writer Laura Bailey is the official “Face of the Festival,” and she was responsible for presenting the prize to the Best Dressed Lady. Women were told to “Look out for one of the ‘spotters’ or enter at the What Best to Wear point opposite the Entrance Pavilion.” First prize for the contest was a limited edition Horseshoe Necklace’s created by designer Theo Fennell:

Laura Bailey wore a stunning hat by esteemed milliner, Philip Treacy:

Aside from Laura’s lovely frock and hat at the derby yesterday, other ladies also sported some unique dresses, hats, fascinators, and accessories:

Being that it’s currently 2 am in California, I will update later today with the fashions of today’s race! Including the result of what the Queen wears!

cheers! andrea ♥
